When growing up in the 80’s/90’s body image was critical. I would wake up at 5 am before school to do aerobics and would go through phases of only eating a grapefruit a day or even baby food. Staying skinny was more important than being healthy. I could no longer play the sports that I wanted because conditioning was not sustainable without fuel. So I tried smoking which was an acceptable option for staying thin. After all the “sexy woman” on TV were doing it so how bad could it be? As expected it resulted in me suffering from tiredness, migraines and asthma.
I got married at 2 months after turning 19 and started a family. While pregnant I continued to smoke & since I was sick all day every day of my pregnancy my nutrition was suffering. In those days smoking caused low birth weight… my husband (at the time) and I were both big babies so what’s the harm? (Since then many studies show a lot more risks.) Luckily my children were both born healthy. (thank God!) I didn’t smoke around my kids because I didn’t want them to be in the same position I was in. Inhalers and breathing machine was a staple in my home and it was a horrible struggle to breathe so on the really bad days I smoked menthol.
Throughout those years what was missing? Self-esteem, knowledge and understanding of what I was doing to my own body.
Fast forward into the late 90’s. I was working outside of our home after being a stay at home mom for 8 years. It was great! I was able to dress up everyday and socialize with other adults. One of my co-worker/friends had talked to me more than once about my smoking; I had no interest in stopping. After 2 kids I could still fit into my HS clothes. Until one day my daughter comes home and informs me that she had told her teacher that I was doing drugs. At school that week they were teaching the DARE program in which tobacco was included in the list of drugs. Game changer!
From that day on things began to change. Slowly I started making decisions that would help me become the person I am today. Is there a lot more to my story? Yep! Were these changes easy? Absolutely not! But I knew God was with me every step of the way.
My passion in this life is to do so much more than exist. There’s so much to do and experience. One of the main reasons I coach nutrition and functional fitness is so that everyone has the knowledge to live the life that they want to live and not just dream about. I want everyone around me to live their BEST life. If you have a passion I want to not only hear about it but I want to help you build on it. Do you have a goal? Let me help you reach it! Bucket list? Let me help you check them off! Life’s too short to wait for one day”. You are not too young, too old, too thin or too big. You’re in the right place at the right time to start today!
